The Patricia A. Duran Elementary School welcomed students from the School of Learning and Teaching in the University of Maine College of Education and Human Development program to provide literacy experiences for students and their families. The college students are currently student teaching in area schools or enrolled in course work leading to teacher certification. They offered fun lessons to the children on phonics, vocabulary building, letter writing (to Pete the Cat!), and different perspectives on literary characters (The True Story of the Three Little Pigs).
Students were able to select a free book at the end of the night, courtesy of Literacy Volunteers of Bangor, and wrapped up the evening with ice cream provided by the school’s PTA. What could be better!? Thank you to Dr. William Nichols from the University of Maine for his partnership on this event.
